Design brief:

To design and prototype a lamp for a friend or family.

I want to design a lamp for one of my friends, who likes simple and environmentally friendly material. The light in his dorm room is so ordinary, so dull and so dark that it interferes with his sleep. In addition, the electric light has a great influence on his study, and there is no air conditioning in their dormitory. This lamp is designed with a small fan. The main reason I want to design a desk lamp for them is to help them solve the problem of high indoor air so that they can study in a comfortable environment. At the same time, it will not occupy too much space on the table. Now students are under a lot of pressure, so a comfortable environment is very important for them. Moreover, most people pay more and more attention to comfort and quality, so there is no doubt that there is a large market for products.


Interview your target user

Guo Wen is a freshman at the university, but there is no air conditioning and desk lamp in the dormitory, and the space of the desk is too small. The light in his dormitory was too dim, and his study was severely affected. Meanwhile, he felt very uncomfortable in a very hot environment. Therefore, he needs a lamp with a fan function that can be carried around during the day and night and can provide him with a comfortable learning environment.

It can be seen that Guowen's dormitory is very simple and dark, which affects his learning and living conditions. However, I designed this lamp to help him study and finish his homework at night.

Highlight interesting findings

When I visited Guowen's dormitory, I saw that Guowen's desk lamp was very big while the desk was very small. There is not enough room for the desk. Moreover, it is very hot in summer because there is no air conditioning in the dorm, which not only prevented him from improving his academic performance but also affected his sleep quality.

Goals and wishes: What is your client trying to achieve?

For a long time, the administrators of the school have ignored some unreasonable designs in the dormitory. For example, some dorms are not equipped with lamps and air conditioners, there is no light switch in front of the bed, the dormitory lights are away from the table, and so on. Therefore, in the design of my desk lamp, I am mainly concerned about some functional problems of students using the desk lamp. Therefore, this kind of lamp should be different from the traditional plug-in lamp, it can be carried and charged, and its height can be adjusted to facilitate students to adjust the height of the lamp according to their own needs. In this way, students can walk around in the library or any place with these lamps.

Insights: What are your new learnings about your client’s feelings and motivations? What’s something you see about your partner’s experience that maybe s/he doesn’t see?

Because of the dim light, the lights used in the dormitory not only failed to improve students' grades, but also greatly affected their eyesight. Therefore, a small light source for them can help them to reduce the pressure on learning and protect their eyesight, then they will feel more relaxed and comfortable. If we add some functions to the lamp, it can also help students to get into their study more quickly. At the same time, students' eyes can be protected while they are studying. As a designer, I think if we need to design a product for students, we need to make sure that most students can use eye-protection products with fan function, which is more comfortable. The principle of product design should be simple and easy to carry, rather than affecting students' learning because of the complexity of product design. In addition, students prefer simple and generous products. At the same time, this product is functional and practical. Therefore, the function of the product should meet the needs of some students so as to attract their desire to buy.


Ideation

I'm going to make a portable fan lamp, which is made of soft glue on the top of wood, because it's one of his favorite colors and materials. I believe my target customers will be deeply attracted by this lamp. At the same time, because Guowen does not like the dim lighting and the lack of air-conditioning in his dormitory, this lamp can help him to study more comfortably with a fan to solve the problem of no air-conditioning in his dormitory. The lamp should be light, portable, and its material should also be safe, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Moreover, by using this lamp, students' eyes can also be protected.

And this lamp also solves the problem of the limited space on the desk with an electric fan. “At the same time, he hopes that the desk lamp is made of some light wood, which can adjust the distance of the lamp, save energy and be easy to carry.

The process of making prototype:

When designing this lamp, I did not use Fusion 360 but Rhino3D NURBS. I haven't used Fusion360 before and I'm not very familiar with this software. I do not think Fusion 360 is suitable for product design. I need to build a model in Rhino3D NURBS, then build a cone, and then choose symmetry to do it. At the same time, I added a fan leaf, which is a fan model I built with Rhino3d NURBS. The modeling of the cone and cylinder is not very complicated, so it is easier for me to use this software.

Later I use Keyshot for material selection and rendering. I used wood to render the light body, which is non-slippery. I changed the size of some buttons. I selected the color of wood grain because it's closer to natural color. To achieve the light-emitting effect, I used the A-Series light bulb for rendering, which has an energy-saving effect.




Wood is adopted because of the low price and the effect of environmental protection and it has a good modeling ability.


Design Summary:

Challenge: In the process of designing the table lamp, there is a challenge for me. First of all, this is my first time using Tinkercad, so this is a difficult thing for me, which will be finished in 2 weeks. Secondly, circuit diagrams need some physical knowledge and program code. I learn and try to make them through YouTube tutorials. There may be some circuit problems, including coding errors, which is a great challenge for me.


Strengths: For me, one of the advantages is that I will have a sense of achievement after finishing.

For users, this lamp can meet their needs and use of lamp functions. Secondly, this lamp can make students enjoy life and focus on learning more. At the same time, this lamp can be used portable and taken out. You only need a data line. The process of creating this project taught me a lot. As a designer, I have the opportunity to learn different tools, which is a good opportunity to design products for customers and participate in the whole process.


Improvements needed:

This desk lamp still needs to be improved. For example, the appearance of the desk lamp may be simple without any creativity.
